The Marriages between Zones Three Four and Five Canopus in Argosarchives Doris Lessing 9780394749785 Books

This is the second in the Canopus in Argos series and it is the best. I absolutely love this story. This is a beautiful love story that evolves and transforms. This novel builds upon the first one in the series. I would start with the first book and move on from there into the whole series, as you really must do that to understand what is going on. Doris Lessing’s fresh images and vivid imagination make this series a true literary accomplishment and I’m so happy I was introduced to her writing in college. I highly recommend this series and especially this title. It was my favorite in the series and I’ve reread it several times now. Each time I find something new and fresh and come away satisfied with a good read.

The Marriages between Zones Three Four and Five Canopus in Argosarchives Doris Lessing 9780394749785 Books Reviews

This gets 5 stars because I love the series "Shikasta" definitely being the best of the series. I had lent out my copy and had to replace it. Not as well written as the earlier books in the series.
A truly wonderful book. I've read it at least 4 times and am sure, eventually I read it at least that many times more. It has many layers and as I evolve I reach another.... so it never gets old.
How little we know or can imagine what may happen to this planet, or any other, as it has been happening for ages! And the reason for all this providing experiences developing our consciousness, us the uppermost layer of the planet, or perhaps of this particular solar system.

Remember that Lady Doris was a student and friend of the eminent sage Idries Shah. Thus the extraordinary quality of this whole series Canopus in Argos Archives of which this volume is a part. Read the whole corpus, I suggest. You will get a wider perspective of what kind of ants, nay bacteria, we are compared to the whole Cosmos. And again, the Purpose of all this both kind of similar to some parts of some religions and also going so much beyond the popular simplifications, beyond what the author calls Degenerative Disease.

And still it is an easy read, not the dryness of the Western philosophy. Of course if you are capable of transcending the mass media or social media daily nonsense. For people who aspire to thinking as opposed to mechanicality which we mistake for thinking. Be prepared to allow that it is less fictional than you may think.
A shocking and couragious book. Verging on masterpiece.
I want to tell you all that if ever a book was more appropriate to read NOW ITS THIS BOOK.
LESSINGS talent for writing books that can be read and understood on so many levels is uncanny,This book could be about War and Peace or about Male and Female or Refined and Primitive, or about connecting with other cultures than our own, or Growth through emotional healing or different dimensions of being like here and "astral plane " or different planets people meeting and intermarrying. IT IS ALL OF THESE AND MORE . AND SO SO IN TUNE WITH WHAT WE ARE EXPERIENCING NOW ON OUR PLANET. I bought and read it in 1983 and it has been a life changing factor for me,it was on my course at Uppsala university. Someone borrowed and kept it so I was glad to buy new copy on as it has meant so much to me .Zumi Zeviar (Therese Sumner)
I was new to Lessing, so it took me awhile to "get into" this complex book. But once I did I sailed along buoyed by Lessing's excellent prose and imaginative narration.
The Canopus in Argos series by Doris Lessing are often cataloged under "sci fi" or "fantasy." They are a little of both, I guess, but Lessing's is the conceit of a major novelist. These five books transcend any easy cataloging. In the Canopus series, she writes from third person accounts of observers of earth's whole history, observers who have an interest in influencing earth-life to attain a healthy balance with earth's environment at the same time that earth's creatures struggle to evolve toward a consciousness that has a very long view of what is important and necessary rather than the short view that is so very common among humans. That sounds pretty hippy-dippy, which the books are not. Trust me, like any first-rate author, Lessing has a wide view, a big vision that is both light and dark, and she writes excellently.

Lessing's themes here are only more vital today at the start of the second decade of the 21st century, about 40 years after the books were written.

Volume 2 in the series is this one, _The Marriages Btwn Zones 3, 4, and 5_. After vol. 1, _Shikasta_, which has the feel of an epic, this is a lyrical surprise, a wonderful and beautiful love story. Or stories. The stories are related through the memories of a relative of the heroine, the queen of "Zone Two."

What is Zone Two? Well, it doesn't really matter; it's an invention. But the story intertwines three mutually exclusive societies. In Zone 2 there is little differentiation between the sexes and people have multiple partners; the region is wealthy, well-fed though the people eat only what it necessary, the practice of the arts is well-cultivated; people share each other's thoughts and feelings, but they also shun thoughts that are "different" or cause discomfort.

In Zone 3, militarism reigns; men and women live largely separate existences; all the men are warriors organized into a large army, but there is little for them to fight, though the men train for war continuously; rape is common; the women have learned to organize in a separate subculture that yearns for a better life; the Zone is poor, agriculture rudimentary, the arts almost unknown (though in secret the women sing and dance their oral histories); people are trained, by brutal means, to avoid looking at the western mountains (of Zone 2), but when the men are absent, the women's secret is that they turn and stare upward, westward.

And Zone 4 This is a society divided into two classes. One has built well-to-do cities that feature a thriving mercantilism. The other is that of loosely organized sets of bands of rapacious and murderous -- but VITAL -- horsemen, modeled on the Mongols, who in waves sweep down upon to destroy and pillage the defenseless merchant cities.

What in the world is Lessing doing here? Well, she tells a moving love story that is partly romantic ballad -- sort of a lyric prose poem -- partly political allegory, partly folk tale ... and then there are the Zones themselves, which are first encountered in Vol. 1 of the Canopus series (_Shikasta_), and I don't know quite what to say about them! But at least I can understand the yearning for the heights of those mountains!

This is my favorite of the five volumes in the series. If the whole series makes a symphony, this is its lyrical slow movement. I recommend the book VERY highly to you; this is high literature.
