The first sixteen chapters are written so just right. Like some of the other reviewers have indicated, the book does kind of ramble a bit here and there. The rest of the chapters after the first sixteen don't keep you wanting to read as much as the first chapters, BUT, I love Ellen O'Connell's writing and forgive her this. It was her book to write as she wished, after all; and it's still better than a lot of authors I have read. Not as well written as Eyes of Silver, Eyes of Gold, which I love as much as everyone else out there, but I believe her masterpiece so far is Dancing on Coals. Read it if you haven't. But in this book, the characters make up for the dragging pace of the middle and last part of the story, and there is still much excellent writing and story content all throughout. I certainly want Ellen to keep writing. And I'll keep reading.

Sing My Name edition by Ellen O'Connell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This is a beautiful story. But when I write beautiful, I do not mean easy, gentle ... there is nothing easy and gentle about this story. Two people who never should have met, cross paths and rely on each for a period of time -- and they soon realize it is an ideal time in their life that they will forever look back on. They discover love and passion and then are separated for years. This is a story that will draw you in and you will fall in love with the setting, with the historical details and the characters. And your heart will be break because ugly things do happen to these characters. The middle of this book dragged for me and there are quite a few characters that I stopped try to keep track of. The middle dragged because of important character set-up and story set-up. Despite the lag in the story, I still highly recommend this book. While the book was a little long and the middle portion dragged, the last portion of the book was rewarding.
Another great book by EO'C. Matt Slade saves Sarah Hammond from Commanches while she is on her way to meet her fiancé, Major Carter McCauley-Matt had been taken prisoner by two bounty hunters for a crime that he didn't commit and they find themselves the only two people left alive after the Indian attack. Two people with very different backgrounds, Sarah, a woman from the east, from a family of abolitionists; Matt, a man from the south, former Rebel, a man who had lost all his family at a very young age. Somewhere along the way, Sarah falls in love with Matt; he keeps pushing her toward McCauley even though he wants her for himself. The personality that the author attributes Matt is so good; he is a kind man, jokes about everything and makes Sarah feel secure; but he has such an inferiority complex. Their experiences trying to survive makes Sarah into a strong woman and she finds out just how much she needs that strength when they are finally rescued by soldiers. The years that they spend apart after being rescued exact a great toll on both their lives. Sarah never gives up on loving Matt and he doesn't forget her but he believes that she is better off without him. If you like westerns, romance, like to root for the underdog-you will enjoy this book; I hope to see more of EO'C's works.
I have read all of Ellen O’Connell’s books but had certain hesitations about reading this one based on other reviews that were-unfortunately-validated.

O’Connell is an excellent gritty romance writer that puts just the right amount blood and tears and love into her stories. But this book had such a disproportionate amount of violence and oppression that there was no joy in the very sparse love story. The relationship happens quickly and then dies for more than 60% of this book, while their looooong and epicly boring separation dragged on. Their lukewarm reunion and the Hero’s subsequent internal struggle also dragged on and on to the point that I just didn’t care.

In “Atonement” fashion, the H/H are put thru so much pain and suffering that it overwhelmed me, while having the opposite effect when these two characters finally reunited. Their ‘happily ever after’ just wasn’t enough to wipe the tragic saga.

Not her best work.
